The speaker's stance

This just in from the speaker's office:

STATEMENT REGARDING THE HILL MOTION

(AUSTIN) - Alexis DeLee issued the following statement on the rulings made by Speaker Tom Craddick:

"The Speaker's position is that he will see to it that the House conducts the important business of the state. The other side wants to go outside the House Rules to carry out a speaker's race during the session, and we are not going to play that game."

That's all you'll be hearing from us tonight (this morning, actually), until things start back up in ... well, a matter of hours. But thanks to all the readers who stuck with us through this extraordinary evening. And especially to the commenters for adding their insights. We hope we made things a little clearer and a little more fun for you.

Fantastic! I love that the statement is regarding "the Hill Motion" when Craddick refused to recognize Hill's motion as a proper motion.

His press secretary is now acknowledging that it was in fact a motion. For the record, that means his parliamentarian, assistant parliamentarian, and press secretary acknowledge the motion to vacate as a real motion.

If only the Speaker could learn to listen to his staff.
